Franklin Delano Roosevelt – 1933, Capitol, Washington D.C. – First Presidential Inaugural Address
Franklin D. Roosevelt is often included in shortlists of the best presidents to lead the United States. And for a good reason. Nicknamed “FDR,” he led the country through both the Great Depression and World War II. His first presidential inaugural address even revolved around the former.
Speaking in 1933, years after the stock market crash, FDR declared war on the Great Depression and laid out his plans to defeat it. His steadfast commitment to this cause and his statement, “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” offered hope to a people in deep economic despair.
