Maya Angelou – 1993, The Capitol, Washington D.C. – Poem Read on the Occasion of Bill Clinton’s Inauguration
Before Amanda Gorman, there was Maya Angelou. Then already a celebrated writer best known for her autobiography “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,” she received the honor of reading a poem at the inauguration of former President Bill Clinton in 1993.
Angelou recited “On The Pulse Of Morning,” which she specifically wrote for the occasion, and shared similar themes with Clinton’s inaugural speech. The poem later earned her a Grammy trophy and marked the continuation of the tradition begun by poet Robert Frost at John F. Kennedy’s inauguration in the ’60s.
