Gabriel García Márquez – 1982, Stockholm, Sweden – Speech on the Acceptance of the Nobel Prize in Literature
Gabriel García Márquez sacrificed a lot—even selling his car to help his family get by—to write what became the novel “One Hundred Years Of Solitude.” His hard work paid off as the book was a hit and later earned him the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1982.
To accept the award, Márquez delivered a speech titled “The Solitude Of Latin America.” It put the spotlight on topics like the region’s colonial history and its unique culture, subjects that also featured extensively in his written works. What’s more, he considered the prize as a recognition of Latin American literature as a whole.
