Rigoberta Menchú Tum – 1992, Oslo, Norway – Speech on the Acceptance of the Nobel Peace Prize
Dressed in traditional Mayan clothes, Rigoberta Menchú Tum made history on December 10, 1992, when she delivered her acceptance speech as the first indigenous woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. With the entire world as her audience, she shared the history and struggles of her people, including the then-ongoing civil war in Guatemala.
With the help of this prestigious recognition and the popularity of Tum’s memoir, peace was eventually restored in the Central American nation. A renewed peace process was brokered from 1994 to 1996. She went on to become a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador and even vied for her country’s presidency.
