Sacheen Littlefeather – 1973, Los Angeles, California – Speech Declining Marlon Brando’s Oscar Award

It’s not just political figures that are remembered for great orations. Sacheen Littlefeather, an actress and activist, is also due to her famous 1973 Oscar unacceptance speech for Marlon Brando. He declined the Academy Award for Best Actor in protest of the degrading cinematic portrayal of Native Americans.
Littlefeather, clad in an Apache dress, took to the stage and refused to receive Brando’s trophy, going on to read a statement prepared by “The Godfather” actor instead. While the brave act left a lasting impression on audiences, it, unfortunately, led to the blacklisting of Littlefeather from Hollywood, as she shared in a 2021 interview with The Guardian.
