The Statue Of David Inside A Protective Cocoon
Believe it or not, the famed statue of “David” was enveloped in a cocoon of bricks to protect it from the onslaught of attacks during World War II. The 17-foot work of art was hidden from view beginning in 1943 until it was unveiled once again two and a half years later.
Writing about the statue’s emergence from its shield in the book “The Venus Fixers,” author Ilaria Dagnini Brey said that the marble marvel looked dirty and dusty when it was opened. However, the plan seemed to work, and Michelangelo’s masterpiece remained unscathed. Today, it stands proud at the Gallery of the Academy of Florence in Italy.
