Mount Vesuvius Unleashes Its Fiery Fury Amid World War II
If a raging war wasn’t nerve-wracking enough, the residents living near Mount Vesuvius in Italy had to grapple with a volcanic eruption as well. This all went down in March 1944, a couple of centuries after it last wreaked major havoc in 1631.
Of course, the Allied troops posted around the volcano as it was spitting its fiery fury also bore witness to the destruction that ensued. According to Earth magazine, Mount Vesuvius spewed ash and rocks the size of basketballs for over a week displacing the residents of the town of San Sebastiano, who were evacuated by military forces.
