A Child Afflicted With Smallpox In The ’60s
Today, there is no documented case of naturally occurring smallpox transmission anywhere in the globe. Once upon a time, though, the illness devastated people in many countries. Among them is this poor child, who contracted the disease during the epidemic that hit Poland in the early ’60s.
According to the Institute of National Remembrance, smallpox came to the European nation through Lieutenant Colonel Bonifacy Jedynak. The good news, though, is that a vaccine was already available at the time, and the Polish government was able to contain the outbreak before it spread some more.
