The Eerie Beauty Of A Nuclear Detonation
Without context, this eerily beautiful blob can easily be mistaken for a jellyfish or maybe some kind of rare plant. In reality, though, this image shows a nuclear detonation in progress as part of the Operation Tumbler–Snapper tests in the early ’50s.
This photo and many of its kind were made possible by a device called the Rapatronic camera, which the defense contractor EG&G developed. Designed to only capture one exposure per roll of film; multiple Rapatronic devices had to be set up to take multiple exposures and create images such as this one.
