Fight the Power, Public Enemy, 1989, Political hip-hop
Public Enemy rose to prominence for their songs about political messages. As such, filmmaker Spike Lee believed they could provide him with an anthem song for his political movie, “Do the Right Thing.” When “Fight the Power” was released in 1989, it was everything the film needed and repeatedly played on the radio, making it an instant classic.
A different version was included in Public Enemy’s 1990 studio album “Fear of a Black Planet.” As a single, “Fight the Power” dominated the charts and received widespread recognition for its human rights message. It reached the top spot on Hot Rap Singles, and The Village Voice named it the best single of 1989.
