My Girl, The Temptations, 1964, Soul/R&B
The Temptations are one of the most successful musical groups in history, having pioneered psychedelic soul and influenced R&B. Among their long list of successful singles and albums, their 1964 hit “My Girl” marked their first number one single in the United States and became their signature song until today.
Songwriter Smokey Robinson drew inspiration from his wife, and as soon as The Temptations heard the first rhythm track, they begged him to let them record the song. Years after its release, the Library of Congress selected it to be preserved in the National Recording Registry for its cultural, historical, and aesthetic significance.
