Lauryn Hill made waves in the industry by breaking stereotypes for female rappers and introducing melodic rapping into popular music. Her debut solo single “Doo Wop (That Thing)” was no different, as it marked many firsts in music. It carries a message of warning to African-American men and women who are caught in a struggle.
The song became Hill’s first and only US number one hit and the first single to reach such that it was written, recorded, and produced by a sole female artist. It stayed at number one for two weeks, making Hill the third woman to do so after Mariah Carey and Celine Dion.
