Oliver Stone – Unknown Rank: 1967
It takes a certain level of genius to make a movie out of your experiences in the Vietnam War, especially when it wins Academy Awards for Best Director and Best Picture. Of course, Oliver Stone couldn’t have imagined that joining the U.S. Army would set him up for an illustrious career in Hollywood.
He joined in 1967, explicitly requesting combat because he saw war as a rite of passage. Stone was wounded twice in action before being discharged in 1968. He received two personal awards, the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. In addition, he’s credited as a director of the 2021 movie “JFK Revisited: through The Looking Glass.”
