Paul Newman – Petty Officer Third Class: 1943
American actor, film director, race car driver, and entrepreneur Paul Newman passed through challenges before achieving success. After leaving high school, he joined the U.S. Navy V-12 program with the ambition of becoming a pilot. However, that plan never came to fruition, as he got reassigned, serving overseas and taking part in the 1945 Battle of Okinawa.
Newman’s first Broadway role was in William Inge’s “Picnic.” He also starred in movies like “Cool Hand Luke” and “The Color of Money.” Even though he passed away in 2008, his legacy lives on. In 2021, Forbes reported the continued impact of a camp he founded in 1988 named “SeriousFun Children’s Network.”
