On one particular occasion, he stopped along the path of a team of onrushing sled dogs as he was all set to attack their leader. It wasn’t his lucky day, as the leader in question was a malamute, a breed that was bred especially for their endurance and strength.
In contrast, Togo almost looked like he belonged in an animal clinic. He was seriously injured by the much bigger dog. For the brash dog, that became an invaluable lesson. It taught him to steer clear of advancing sled teams and never attack lead dogs again. That knowledge would prove useful for him as a sled team leader.
