The Serum Run’s True Hero
By the time the riders embarked on the relay, Nome’s situation had become a national topic. Newspapers and radios throughout the United States reported the updates even as the teams battled through the harsh winds to deliver the serum.
When Gunnar Kaasen and his lead dog, Balto, reached Nome on February 2, 1925, with the batch of the antitoxin completely intact, they instantly became national heroes. Balto was widely celebrated for a long time after the event, but Seppala, the musher that also bred Balto, felt it was Togo who deserved the most credit for the serum run’s success.
