Mad Dash Across The Sound

The decision to take the Norton Sound stemmed from the fact that it provided the shortest distance to Seppala’s destination. Taking the standard route might have stretched the trip by days. The air was so bitter it was difficult to breathe, and a terrible storm was on his path. Still, the musher rode undeterred into the treacherous ice of the Norton Sound.
In what could only be considered a superhuman dash, he reached Shaktoolik on January 31. He had braved the storm, survived the Sound, and covered 170 miles in just three days. Almost all would have been for nothing, if it weren’t for another stroke of providence.
