A New World Of Fame For The Serum Run Heroes
For the days, months, and years that followed, the mushers and their dogs were celebrities. The death toll in Nome was officially listed at five. An unfortunate number, but the heroic man and dog teams had averted a greater disaster, and the country recognized this.
The teams were given letters of commendation from the president himself. Kaasen, Seppala, and their dogs toured the country. Kaasen would tour the West Coast with Balto while Seppala and Togo would draw huge crowds throughout the country and participate in many races for entertainment. The dogs boosted the popularity of sled dog races, although these would later bother people concerned about animal rights.
