Nome’s Response To The Diphtheria Outbreak
Nome’s quick reaction to the epidemic stemmed from a major and quite lucky discovery—300,000 units of the much-needed diphtheria antitoxin had been located in a hospital in Anchorage. They had immediately been transported by ship to Nenana, but that was as far as the serum would go by any major transport.
Nenana to Nome was full of chest-deep snow and unpredictable storms in the winter. The route was only pliable through the Iditarod Trail, and although it covered a ghastly distance of more than a thousand kilometers, the locals were willing to bet their lives on their best mushers.
