Seppala and his team rested for a few hours before continuing their journey early the next morning. They woke up to greater peril, as the storm had not only worsened but also blew away most of the ice on the sea, rendering it largely unpassable.
Again, the man and his intelligent canines persevered. Running in an area close to the shore that was still frozen, the team played a dangerous game with death as they sprinted on cracking ice that could give in at any moment. It was at this moment that Togo’s ingenuity was advertised, as he carefully led the team through splitting ice beds and prevented their plunge.
